Hey kids, don’t do drugs
by andy on Mar.08, 2010, under I Eat Music, Music, Video
Having bad ideas while on drugs is not a new thing, but I’m impressed that anyone could stay stoned long enough that this song not only got recorded but also had a video made for it. The rap section is a particular highlight.

Shane MacGowan is magic
by andy on Feb.27, 2010, under I Eat Music, Music, Radio, Streaming audio, Video
Channel 4 cut Shane MacGowan’s epic and entirely incoherent introduction to the video for his Haiti charity single, I Put A Spell On You, from their coverage of the NME Awards, which is a shame, because it was one of the highlights of the evening.
Here’s an interview he did with NME Radio’s Jon Hillcock earlier in the evening, when he was a bit more sober:
But, being able to drink dangerous quantities of alcohol is not Shane’s only talent. The group of musicians he managed to pull together for his cover of I Put A Spell On You, which includes Bobby Gillespie, Johnny Depp, Mick Jones, Glen Matlock and Paloma Faith, makes an impressive list. And the song itself is fantastic, as well. A charity single you could actually listen to? That doesn’t happen so often.
The single’s released on 8 Mar. You can pre-order it at 7Digital, here, or by texting SPELL (all in capitals) to 78789 (texts cost £1.50).
Gay For Johnny Depp – Hey Fucked Up! (Punk Rock Can’t Exist In Countries With Good Social Services)
by andy on Nov.25, 2009, under CMU, Music, Video
Everything’s got too nice around here. People are talking about Christmas, how great everything is, togetherness, that sort of thing. What we really need is a song that has nothing nice to say about anyone and is accompanied by a violent video. So, here you go.
‘Hey Fucked Up! (Punk Rock Can’t Exist In Countries With Good Social Services)’ is taken from Gay For Johnny Depp’s new EP, ‘Ski Mask Orgy’, and features on their career-spanning compilation, ‘Manthology’. The video recreates a standard GFJD show, with the band turning up without instruments, donning balaclavas and massacring the audience with a variety of weapons.
Speaking of which, they’re on tour at the moment, playing dates around the country and finishing up at The Borderline in London on 4 Dec. So that’s nice.
Oh No Ono – Swim
by andy on Nov.17, 2009, under CMU, Music, Review, Video
Danish psychedelic epicists (yeah, that’s a word) Oh No Ono return next February with a new album, ‘Eggs’, and the first single from it, ‘Swim’, was released last week. Initially unsure of the track, I replayed it over and over again to try to work out if I liked it or not.
Eventually, I realised I was playing it not though lack of an opinion, but because I’d fallen in love with it. A simple song, lifted by string-drenched orchestral bursts, it bodes very well for the rest of the album.
I’d tell you to go and listen to it on MySpace, but the garish design of their profile is a bit of an assault on the eyes. Instead, check out the video, in which the song soundtracks the confused sexual fantasies of a child.
Three Trapped Tigers – 6
by andy on Nov.11, 2009, under CMU, Music, Video
It’s a classic tale, and one we all know well: octopus tries to shoot an apple off a peanut’s head, William Tell-style, with a bow and arrow, he misses and shoots several arrows into the peanut’s body, the peanut gets annoyed, then they get into a big fight before inhaling smoke from boxes and hallucinating various scenes of love and death.
You’ve seen it a hundred times before, and you’ll probably see it a hundred more, but you won’t always see it soundtracked by Three Trapped Tiger’s ‘6′, taken from their second EP, ‘EP2′. Which is exactly why you should click play on this (plus, it’s a very good video).
